How To Find Your Niche as a Content Creator
You’ll NEVER find your niche.
Controversial? Yes.
You evolve with time and your content has to evolve too.
The most common advice given by ‘unsuccessful’ creators on the internet is to “find a niche” and stick to it.
But if you are just getting started on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or any social media platform, you probably have no idea where to start.
So instead of trying to find a niche, look inward.
What does “look inward” mean?
Take some time and reflect on your interests.
Ask your friends what topics or ideas you talk about quite a lot.
Identify what you have great knowledge of.
Once you have some level of idea on what you might be interested in creating, it’s time to make your piece of content (video, blog, podcast, etc.) and start experimenting.
For example:
Let’s say you’re very interested in Cricket.
Make a live commentary video during a match, talk about a recent controversy, highlight from the past, etc.
That’s one way to get started - Find something you’re emotionally attached to.
Here’s another example:
I’m a Digital Marketing Generalist.
So I can make content about email marketing or the creator economy, which is what I’m doing with Creator Forensics ;)
That's how you can find your niche, create content on what you're interested in right now, and keep going.
Lesson #1: Start with your current passion.
You need to start with your current interests and let the niche evolve and take shape because when you're starting out you do not know what you like or dislike.
You might make a video about cricket and then realise you don’t enjoy it that much.
But if you’ve defined yourself as a “Cricket YouTuber” then you’ll feel weird about evolving.
So don’t make definitive decisions with your niche, you have to let yourself evolve and take shape over time.
It’s all about re-iterating.
To get the perfect flavour, the chef needs to keep remaking the dish and test the taste.
Lesson #2: Stay open to change and evolution.
Here are some great examples of how creators evolved with time and change –
1. MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson)
Started with: Gaming content (Minecraft and Call of Duty streams)
Current niche: Viral challenges, philanthropy, and high-budget productions.
2. Gary Vee
Started with: Sharing his knowledge and expertise about Wine on WineLibraryTV.
Current niche: Content marketing, entrepreneurship & brand building.
3. Iman Gadzhi
Started with: Fitness content, and documenting his journey.
Current niche: Business, and agency building.
4. Ali Abdaal
Started with: Med student content (study tips, exam preparation, etc.).
Current niche: Self-development, productivity, and content creation.
5. Alex Hormozi
Started with: Gym ownership content.
Current niche: High-ticket sales, business scaling, and wealth creation.
6. Michelle Khare
Started with: Fitness, beauty & feminine content.
Current niche: Extreme physical & mental challenge videos.
These examples are just the tip of the iceberg.
To build a loyal audience, you have to be authentic and be yourself.
Now, here’s this article’s takeaway -
Don't box yourself in from the start.
Instead:
Begin with what excites you right now.
Create content around your current passions and interests.
Pay attention to what resonates with you & your audience.
Allow your content to evolve naturally as you grow
Your "niche" isn't a target.
It's a living, breathing aspect of your content that will develop and change as you do.
Here are action steps you can follow to get started –
Make a list of your current interests and passions.
Start by creating one piece of content around one of the topics.
Experiment, experiment, experiment.
Engage with your audience and identify what they’re most interested in.
Be open to pivoting and exploring new ‘niches’ as you grow.
BONUS:
The Rule of 100
Learned from Noah Kagan, this rule is simple: Don’t quit until you’ve completed 100 reps of a task.
This applies to any form of content:
100 YouTube Videos
100 Podcast Episodes
100 Blog Posts
100 Instagram Reels
100 TikToks
100 Emails
This rule ensures you give yourself enough time and practice to see tangible results.
Remember, the most successful creators aren't necessarily those who stuck rigidly to one niche, but those who allowed their content to evolve with their interests and their audience's needs.
So, forget about finding the perfect niche.
The niche will find you.
Create authentic content that excites you.
Until next time, keep creating and evolving!
